Marine technicians and mechanics help keep
ships afloat by installing, maintaining and repairing all the electrical
or mechanical equipment and systems found on a ship, including the
engines. There are few online certificate programs available in marine
technology, as well as programs in the related areas of automotive
mechanics and small engine repair.
Choosing an Online Marine Mechanic or Marine Technician Educational Program
Curriculum
The curriculum in a marine technology program can vary, because a
mechanic or technician's responsibilities on board a ship are broad.
Marine mechanics and technicians work with boilers, pumps, plumbing,
rigging, outboard and inboard engines (diesel or gasoline powered),
compressed gas systems for cooking, generators, ventilation and air
conditioning systems. Technicians also work on electronic navigation
systems, and on the application and repair of the fiber-reinforced
laminated material on a ship's hull.
The Marine Industry Training and Education Council (MITEC) maintains a
detailed listing of marine technician careers, as well as a nationwide
directory of related training programs (
www.boatingcareerinfo.org).
While there are many schools across the country that offer marine
technology programs, online programs are rare, due to the hands-on
nature of the instruction.
However, many schools and technical institutes offer online courses in automotive mechanics and
small engine repair.
Since ships use internal combustion engines, an aspiring marine
mechanic may find these courses useful preparation for a marine
technology career.
Award Levels
Distance education students can earn certificates of completion and
advanced certificates in marine technology. Some programs and courses
are offered jointly with the American Boat and Yacht Council (ABYC). The
ABYC also offers the Marine Technician Certification Program. Students
can earn the ABYC Certified Technician or Master Technician credential (
www.abycinc.org).
Online Program Delivery
Distance education programs in marine technology are available online
or, in some cases, through the mail. Typically, students access lessons
through a school's website and contact instructors by e-mail. Online
and distance courses usually allow students to study at their own pace,
completing one instruction module at a time. Students may be required to
purchase software or other materials in addition to tuition for the
course. Other requirements typically include a computer with Internet
access and a valid e-mail account.
Online Certificate of Completion in Marine Technology
Through this online certificate program, courses are available
concerning fuel systems, metal corrosion and the technical aspects of
boat design. In conjunction with the program, the ABYC also offers
webinars on a variety of subjects related to marine technology.
Online Auto Repair Technician Program
Online auto repair technician programs are available for students who
want to study the internal combustion engine. This program covers
different types of engines, including how they operate and perform under
different conditions. In addition, engine lubrication is studied, along
with electrical, cooling and ignition systems. The troubleshooting and
repair of engine problems is also addressed.
