Online Massage Therapist Training Programs, Courses and Classes

Fully online courses and training programs in massage therapy are difficult to find due to the practical nature of the work. Instead, hybrid programs and courses may be more readily available. Continuing education (CE) is usually required by states for licensure or certification, and many fully online courses fulfilling CE requirements are available for practicing therapists.

Overview of Massage Therapist Courses

Massage therapists provide physical manipulation of soft tissues and superficial muscles to relieve stress and muscle tension. Most massage therapy courses and programs are open to beginners and usually have no restrictions. Fully online programs are harder to find, since most schools require students to devote at least one day a week to hands-on practice.
In order to practice massage therapy for a living, students need to be licensed, certified or registered with their state. States have differing regulations for massage therapists. Education requirements must be completed through an approved program or school and usually span at least 500 hours. Voluntary national certification is administered by the National Certification Board for Therapeutic Massage and Bodywork (NCBTMB). Massage therapists are typically self-employed or work part-time.

Course Requirements

Online coursework requires a computer with Internet access and audio-video players. Students may need e-mail for assignment completion and communication. Typical office software, such as Microsoft Word or Excel, may also be needed. Students may need to purchase their own massage equipment and supplies for self-practice. If enrolled in hybrid courses, students need to be on-campus periodically for practical training and evaluation.
