Fast track online LPN to RN programs that award degrees usually lead to an Associate in Applied Science in Nursing. Some of these programs focus on preparing students for RN licensure and do not award a degree. All of these programs require applicants to be currently-licensed LPNs, and work experience as an LPN may also be a requirement. Some programs present applicants with a list of competencies in basic nursing tasks, and successful applicants must be able to demonstrate their ability to perform these tasks. Required competencies may include medication administration, post-partum care, glucose monitoring and specimen collection.
In some cases prerequisite coursework in subjects like English composition, psychology, math and anatomy is also required. Some schools also require applicants to complete nursing courses in topics like assessment and nursing leadership prior to admission. For some programs, admission to the school does not guarantee admission to the LPN to RN program, and it is necessary to apply to the school and the nursing program separately. Graduates of properly-accredited online fast track LPN to RN programs are eligible to sit for the National Council Licensure Exam for Registered Nurses (NCLEX-RN).

Online LPN to RN Coursework

Online coursework may include classes in pharmacology, surgical nursing procedures, pediatric nursing, mental health nursing, nursing leadership, pathophysiology, newborn nursing or maternal-child nursing. Hands-on clinical work at a program-approved site is a common requirement, and these clinical experiences often count for course credit. Clinical site posts typically include rotations in a number of medical specializations such as adult health, obstetrics, psychiatric nursing, pediatrics, geriatrics and surgical nursing. Depending on the program, students may complete this coursework on a part-time basis.

Registered nurses are qualified for work in hospitals, home-health clinics and extended-care settings. According to the U.S. Bureau of Labor and Statistics (BLS), registered nursing positions are expected to increase 22% from 2008-2018, with the largest number of new positions in physician's offices (www.bls.gov).
