Computer numerically controlled (CNC)
programming is used to control precision manufacturing equipment in
order to cut, mill or shape products during a manufacturing process. CNC
programming education programs are hard to find online, but a few
certificate programs and continuing education courses do exist.
How to Choose an Online School for CNC Programming
Online Education Options
Fully online education programs specifically in CNC programming are
not commonly available due to the specialty equipment and hands-on
training requirements. A few community colleges and technical schools
offer partially online certificate programs related to CNC programming,
however, for those who wish to enter the manufacturing industry. These
are entry-level programs for students with no existing CNC training.
They typically offer general education courses online, while still
requiring students to appear on-campus for CNC training. Some schools
also offer online CNC simulation programs as part of the certificate
program.
Some schools offer joint training programs with the manufacturers of
CNC programming equipment. These programs may be offered as a continuing
education course or as part of a certificate or associate degree
program.
Program Focus and Peripheral Education
Programs that cover CNC programming are often designed for those who
plan on entering the field of manufacturing. While programs that only
cover CNC programming may be available, these programs are few and far
between. More common are manufacturing or machining education programs
that include courses on CNC programming as part of their studies.
Prospective CNC programming students may choose programs that includes
courses most related to their career goals. Students may wish to look
for topics in manufacturing technology, machine tooling, mechanical
drafting and
industrial technology.
Online CNC Programming Program Options
Online CNC Programming Certificate
CNC programming certificates are often specifically designed to teach
students about the programming language and mathematics needed for
successfully controlling precision manufacturing equipment. Both online
and partially online programs typically include classes in lathe
programming, mill programming and advanced math.
Online CNC Skills Training Courses
Individual online courses are the most common type of fully online
CNC training. They are often created by a CNC programming equipment
manufacture and offered through a community college or vocational
school. Students may choose between entry-level and advanced training
programs that teach about control panels, touch probes, manual
operations, program entry, troubleshooting and program codes.
