Online Schools for Harley Davidson Mechanics: How to Choose

There are no fully-online degree options specifically for aspiring Harley Davidson mechanics, though some institutions do offer programs for general motorcycle mechanics in a fully-online format. Hybrid programs are available however, and often result in a diploma, associate's or bachelor's degree.

How to Choose an Online School for Harley Davidson Mechanics

There are several traditional colleges and technical institutes that have a cooperation agreement with Harley Davidson to offer training specifically for the repair of Harley Davidson motorcycles. None of these official programs offer fully-online options for prospective Harley Davidson mechanics, though several offer hybrid programs with online components. There are fully online options for prospective motorcycle mechanics, however, offered by other institutions.

Level of Study

The first question in regard to the effectiveness of an education program for a motorcycle mechanic is the depth in which the program covers how a motorcycle works, how it can break and how a mechanic goes about troubleshooting and fixing problems.
Some colleges' online courses include instruction in routine maintenance and thorough training in the theory of how a motorcycle works. Other programs, particularly hybrid programs, offer hands-on instruction in how a motorcycle works and how they are to be maintained and repaired.

Hands-on Program Elements

Another factor that is key in an program for mechanics is how hands-on the program is. While online-only programs obviously cannot have hands-on sessions, they do at times offer video, tutoring and detailed assistance, as well as encouragement for students who will use their instruction to repair and care for their own motorcycles. The degree to which these options are supported is a key aspect of the effectiveness of a motorcycle repair program.

Online Options for Motorcycle Mechanic Education

Motorcycle Repair Diploma

Most motorcycle repair programs that are offered in a purely-online format result in a diploma, and not a full degree. They are composed of one or more courses, usually including downloadable media and specifically designed to incorporate e-mail, instant messenger and forum communication capabilities as well as online testing.

Associate's Degree in Automotive Technology

Often, more involved motorcycle mechanic programs result in an associate's degree, usually in a subject such as automotive technology. These programs almost always use education portal software for communication between students and their instructors. Hybrid programs also make use of this technology for classes with online components.
