Overview of Online Avionics Courses

Avionics technicians repair or maintain aviation electronics systems that function as an integral feature of aircraft navigation, radar systems, collision avoidance systems, radio communications and other electronic flight control systems on private, corporate and commercial aircraft. Avionics certificate and degree programs generally occur on-site at university campuses or aviation schools.
Some programs do offer an avionics certificate in a hybrid format, which includes a series of on-site class sessions and online coursework. Hybrid avionics certificate programs vary in length, but they may require up to 720 hours of coursework. Certificate-level coursework in avionics prepares students to sit for relevant Federal Communications Commission (FCC) exams.

Technical Course Requirements

Blended avionics programs include weekly on-site classes and online coursework, which may be completed at an individual pace. This said, students are encouraged to complete online work in a timely manner to stay current with on-site coursework.
Students will need access to a word processor and the Internet, with the latest version of a browser like Netscape, Internet Explorer or Firefox. In some cases, students may need to enable Java or other plug-in programs, which can be downloaded on a class-by-class basis.
An active e-mail account is also a course requirement; students use e-mail accounts to communicate with teachers and fellow students. Online coursework may utilize online NIDAS systems and a Blackboard learning system for assignment and discussion posts. Students may also be required to purchase textbooks or a set of physical tools.
Blended avionics certificate programs require students to complete prerequisites before program entry. Students must either have a license in airframe and powerplant training, previous work experience in the avionics industry or other previous electronics training. Prerequisites are generally approved by program managers before students begin avionics coursework.

Introductory Avionics Course

These courses offer students skills necessary for work as avionics technicians and radio mechanics. Topics covered include a basic introduction to radio navigation, techniques for installation and repair of air-borne radio communications, troubleshooting and radar equipment systems.

Installation of Avionics Systems Course

This course expands upon introductory avionics, with a focus on aircraft electrical systems and communication systems. Course content includes modules designed to develop students' capacity to perform checks and troubleshoot problems in avionics communication systems, analyze aircraft electrical systems, install avionics systems onto aircraft and calibrate test equipment.

Communication Systems in Avionics Course

Students learn to install, repair and maintain AM and FM transmitters and receivers. FCC rules that pertain to work with AM and FM transmitters are included.

Avionics Navigation Systems Course

Students learn to maintain airborne radio navigation systems, airborne radar systems and accompanying equipment. Principles of operation area navigation systems are an essential course component.
