Online ASE Test Information and Requirements

Automotive professionals looking to earn their Automotive Service Excellence (ASE) certification can prepare for the exam with several online tools. Practice exams are available, allowing applicants to become familiar with the exam format. Study manuals, preparation tips and informational videos are also available.

ASE Certification as Industry Standard

The National Institute for Automotive Service Excellence provides certification testing to automotive industry professionals. The purpose of this institute is to confirm that mechanics and other industry professionals have the proper training to safely maintain automobiles and trucks. Many service stations, repair shops and dealerships require their employees to obtain this certification for employment.

ASE Certification Requirements

To become ASE-certified, an automotive professional must pass an ASE exam and have two years of work experience in the field directly related to the exam. For example, a mechanic who has experience working on light cars cannot use that work experience when obtaining certification in diesel trucks.
According to the ASE website, there are over 40 ASE tests are available for a variety of automotive specialties (www.ase.com). Some specialty options include automobile, collision repair, medium or heavy truck, school bus, heavy truck, alternative fuels and parts specialties. To maintain certification, the automotive professional must take a renewal exam every five years.

ASE Examination Requirements

Prospective automotive specialists beginning their automotive careers can take most ASE exams, even if they do not have the required work experience. They will receive their ASE certification after fulfilling the work requirements and filing the necessary paperwork.
Formal training obtained in high school or through an apprenticeship or post-high school program may fulfill part of the work experience requirements for ASE certification. Those with this training may submit their official transcripts, which show the number of hours or weeks of formal training, for consideration.

ASE Exam Preparation

Some practice ASE exams are available for purchase online, allowing the taker to become familiar with the exam format. As of 2010, the only sample exams available are the automobile and light truck certification exams and the auto parts test P2. These exams test the candidate's knowledge of cars and light trucks that have standard, gasoline-powered engines.
The online exams have a similar format to the computer testing process. The sample exams allow the taker to review their answers and explanations for the questions. Taking the sample exams assists candidates in identifying areas that need additional review before taking the certification exam.

ASE Maintenance and Inspection Program

This online program instructs students in the basic skills needed for light vehicle maintenance and inspection. Using pictures and videos, students learn to check gauges and instrument panels. They also develop basic maintenance skills, such as checking the fluid levels, inspecting suspension elements, and verifying proper brake functions. Completing this program and passing the online exam is not the equivalent of ASE certification. This is an entry-level designation for those starting their automotive careers.
