Online Phlebotomy Courses and Classes Overview

Phlebotomy technicians can be trained through courses which are available online at some colleges. Online phlebotomy program graduates are ready to take a certification exam to become certified phlebotomy technicians.

Phlebotomy Online Courses Overview

These courses can be taken through the Internet with little or no on-campus study. Clinical work is expected of students due to the extremely hands-on nature of this program.
Upon completion of the programs, graduates know how to collect blood samples, enter data into the computer and communicate with doctors and patients, and can take an exam for certification as a phlebotomy technician with the International Academy of Phlebotomy Sciences.

Course Requirements

Other than high speed Internet, students need an accessible e-mail and document-reading program. High-definition screens are helpful for videos and images but not necessary.

This course doubles as a psychology course for dealing with patients compassionately around with needles and blood. Safety protocols are covered, as are communication skills. Through online readings and discussion, students have the opportunity to hone skills for working in an environment that patients may find frightening or uncomfortable.

Phlebotomy Certification Preparation Course

With online practice and study, this course prepares students to take the exam for certification as phlebotomy technician. By the end of the course, students have better knowledge of vial labeling, blood-taking techniques, office and communication skills, safety and anatomy. This course is designed for anyone taking a phlebotomy program or for those who need a refresher course prior to examination by the American Society for Clinical Pathology.

Pediatric Phlebotomy Course

This rare course offers information on working with children when taking blood. Special skills and techniques are taught to make taking blood quicker for children with small arms and delicate skin. Babies are a primary focus of this course as well. This course, if available, can be taken any time during a program.
