Medical equipment technicians, also known as
biomedical equipment technicians, maintain, operate, repair and build
the technology used in hospitals, medical offices and clinics. Online
programs are available at the associate and bachelor's level.
How to Select a Medical Equipment Technician School
Award Levels
An associate's degree is the most common level of training for medical equipment technicians. Bachelor's degree programs prepare students for administrative positions within the field. Graduates with an associate's or a bachelor's degree need at least two years of experience before they may apply for a certification within the field. Certifications available include Certified Biomedical Equipment Technician, Certified Laboratory Equipment Specialist and Radiology Equipment Specialists.Program Type
Programs in biomedical equipment technology are not typically offered fully online, more often students complete hybrid programs. Hybrid programs require students to spend at least part of the time on campus attending workshops and participating in hands-on laboratory training. However, a significant portion of the program is offered online, allowing students to follow lectures and watch seminars though virtual online learning platforms.Technical Requirements
In order to participate in an online program, students require high-speed or broadband Internet to accommodate the transmission of large media files. Students must have regular access to a computer meeting hardware and software requirements. Online learners may be required to have a head set, webcam and scanner to complete online coursework, as well as participate in online lectures.Online Programs in Clinical Laboratory Technology
Online Associate of Applied Science in Biomedical Equipment Technology
Associate degree programs in biomedical technology prepare students for technician-level occupations in medical equipment repair, upgrade and maintenance. The coursework includes not only liberal arts requirements, but also introductory courses in the field, such as conceptual physics and imaging technology, biomedical field circuit analysis and laser fundamentals. Hands-on experience is gained through internship requirements incorporated into the program.Online Bachelor's Degree in Biomedical Engineering Technology
A bachelor's degree program in biomedical engineering technology provides students with a strong base in laboratory technology and biological sciences. Students learn how to use laboratory tools to test biochemical, microbiological and chemical compounds. They use laboratory instruments to calculate, evaluate, record and transmit laboratory information. The program trains them to interpret technical and professional materials and data. Students also test and maintain laboratory equipment for laboratory procedures. Each semester students in the program will participate in simulated online laboratory courses. Advanced chemistry, medical electronics, biostatistics, medical microbiology, electronics circuit analysis and computer communications topics are also explored. Prior to completion of the program, students will also be expected to complete individual research.
