Surgical technologists perform valuable
services before, during and after surgical procedures. In addition to
helping prepare the operating room, technologists may monitor vital
signs, pass instruments, inventory supplies and perform post operative
facility clean-up. A portion of the professional certification process
for surgical techs can be completed online.
Online Surgical Tech Certification
Though professional certification for surgical techs is currently optional, completing the national certification process is advantageous for two reasons. First, since many prospective employers prefer to hire certified technologists, these individuals often possess a competitive advantage in the hiring process. In addition, this credential demonstrates the individual possesses core competencies and knowledge needed in this industry. One of the most common certifications for this field is offered by the National Board of Surgical Technology and Surgical Assisting (NBSTSA).Surgical Tech Certification Eligibility
Surgical tech certification candidates must either possess either a current or past surgical technologist certification or have successfully completed an accredited surgical technology program before beginning the certification process. The surgical technology program should be sanctioned by either the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP) or the Accrediting Bureau of Health Education Schools (ABHES).Certification candidates must complete a Certified Surgical Tech (CST) application, which is available online from the NBSTSA website, as well as provide proof of either certification or graduation from an accredited program. Once paperwork is received and processed, candidates receive authorization for the test, which can be scheduled online. The testing location is provided when the exam is scheduled and fees are paid.
