Online Electrical Certification Programs and Courses

Courses and programs which prepare students for electrical certification and licensure are available online. Electrician courses are available for initial training, continuing education (CE) credits or exam preparation for certification or licensing. Some courses are in hybrid format and include a lab section requiring physical attendance.

Overview of Online Electrical Certification Courses

Electricians install, maintain and repair electrical systems and equipment in homes and commercial buildings. Electricians typically work in construction or maintenance; while some may specialize in one field, others perform jobs in both fields. Due to the importance of hands-on experience in this area, fully online courses and programs can be rare. More commonly, schools offer a mix of online study and school attendance known as a hybrid format.
Online and hybrid electrician training courses and programs are available for continuing education (CE) credits, career diplomas or certificates from accredited institutions. Most states require electricians to be licensed, and licenses can carry both education and experience requirements. Applicants must also pass an exam. Electrical certification programs are often designed to prepare students to take these exams. Completing an electrician training program may lead to possible job titles including construction electrician, maintenance electrician and master electrician.

Course Requirements

Online courses require access to a computer with an Internet connection and updated Web browser. Video lectures and demonstrations may require a media player or DVD player. If required, textbooks are shipped to students after enrollment. Electrician tools may be included with enrollment, or may be available for separate purchase. Hybrid courses require on-campus or workplace training under supervision.

Electricians must know how to read blueprints in order to know where and how to properly install electrical systems. Students learn how to correctly interpret blueprint symbols and abbreviations. This course also explains how to read schematics and electrical drawings.

Residential Wiring Course

In this course, students learn how to install wires, lighting and circuits for all electrical systems within a residential home. Material also covers special circuiting needs for systems like heating and air conditioning.

National Electric Code Course

The National Electric Code (NEC) defines the U.S. standards for electrical installation and safety. State license boards require knowledge of the NEC for electricians. This course is designed as a comprehensive review of the NEC that teaches students the terminology, rules and uses of the Code.
